A Great Foundation
They say you can’t build a house that will last without a good foundation. Having beautiful hair that will last all day is a lot like building a house. Like a house or a good relationship, hair needs a strong foundation to make it last!

Studio hairdressers will use the term building when creating a hairstyle that will last. In my book that’s the definition of a good hair day. A day on the set can be as long as 18 to 20 hours. A bad hair day can seem like an eternity! I’ve given you quick tips and fun cheater ways to get a celebrity hairstyle fast and easy, but now it’s time to look at what you can do to look great all day long.

Over the last few years I’ve built a great foundation with you – and I thank you. I always give you my honest, professional opinion of what works best for me to create beautiful hair on beautiful people. I want it to work for you too!

Claire Danes
"The Great Foundation"

Claire DanesClaire Danes has it! She has hair that is shiny, sleek and polished. A perfect look the way it is – and a perfect foundation to build a hairstyle from. On clean damp hair use between a nickel to quarter-size amount of my prawduct® The Flat Factor. It’s my straightening balm and it will calm the curl and fight the frizz all day. Comb it through well.

A new dryer (and flat iron) I’ve come across is a reinvention of a brand I used to use years ago call Wigo. I know, funny name! The model is Abstrax and they’re fantastic, fun and functional. Brush your hair down towards the floor with a paddle brush, or Olivia Garden Supreme Ionic brush, making sure you have the dryer pointed to towards the floor. While drying, spray a little of my prawduct® Super Volumizing Tonic at the root area. Flip your head over and blow your hair dry toward the floor, then brush it toward the floor. Make sure to brush and dry the top, sides of the head and crown. This process will give you straight hair with some root lift and volume. If you want to polish it up and make it completely straight use a flat iron. The Hot Tools Helix now comes cordless so you can touch up during the day if needed. Gently pull your hair through the flat iron quickly. You can take fairly large sections if you do a good blow-dry. If not, or if your hair is really frizzy or curly, take smaller sections and make sure to comb each before straightening. Establish the part that suits you best and finish with my prawduct® Love That Shine Spray – your hair will shine like glass and be just gorgeous!

Ellen Pompeo and Michelle Pfeiffer

"Sexy, Sexy Hair"

Ellen Pompeo
Now we’re talking sexy tousled hair! Follow the steps for “good foundation” I explained for Claire Danes’ look, using my prawduct® Super Volumizing Tonic on damp hair before blow-drying. Tip your head over getting your hair almost dry using my rough-dry technique. Then tip your head back over and brush your hair from side to side, and then back to front, all the time using your blow dryer. When dry, brush well and set your hair on two and a half-inch Jet Set rollers straight back from your forehead to crown; one row only. Mist the rollers with prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray.

Michelle PfeifferCurl the remaining hair with one-inch barrel curling iron. I use the Hot Tools Professional irons because they give you the ability to turn up the heat if the hair is resistant, or lower the heat and save the hair from excessive damage. Both styles have a slightly off-center to the right broken part. The real difference here is the curl pattern and texture. For Michelle’s look, spiral curl your hair wrapping it back and away from your face, curling from just above your ears and down. For Ellen’s look start the curl a little above the ear and wrap towards your face, then away from your face. This will give you more of a broken texture and less pattern.

For both, after curling, flip your head over and fluff with your fingers while working a little of my prawduct® Dream Cream through your hair. This will give you volume with texture. For extra volume spray my prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray through your hair while tipped over, flip back over, reestablish the part if needed and then shake it out. Tip your head from side to side spraying my prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray up into the hair to give volume with a light and airy quality. For extra shine you can use my prawduct® Love That Shine Spray. Grab it and spray, or keep it with you in your bag – it’s a great hair freshener! Or use some prawduct® Love That Shine Drops to give your hair a fantastic shine with a little texture.

Carrie Underwood and Kate Hudson

"Soft and Simple"

Carrie UnderwoodFor these two soft and simple styles start with my tips for Claire Danes’ “good foundation”, except use the prawduct® Super Volumizing Tonic before drying your hair upside down. This is more for root lift and volume.

Kate HudsonWhen hair is dry, set on large rollers. I use Jet Set rollers; they grip in without clips, Velcro and without any breakage! Use the two and a half-inch size. Spray some of my prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray over the rollers and let them set for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove and brush thoroughly. The rollers will give the hair a slight bend with root lift and volume.

Kate has a center part with straight fringe and Carrie has a right side part with a long swooping fringe to the left side that you will need to secure with hairspray. Choose your favorite and finish it off with a spray of prawduct® Love That Shine Spray.

Hayden Panettiere, Fergie, Jessica Alba and Jessica Simpson
"My Hair Quadruplets - Fraternal and I Love Them All"

Hayden Panetierre
Each of them, Hayden, Fergie and the two Jessica’s, look stunningly beautiful. Their looks are healthy, long and sexy with volume and shine – their hairstyles are almost exactly the same. Let me clue you in on how you can get the hairstyle and make subtle changes to personalize it and make it your own.

It’s time for another hair cocktail! Mix a quarter size dollop of prawduct® The Flat Factor with a silver dollar size dollop of my prawduct® Rawhold Gel in the palms of your hands and work it through your hair well. Use proportionally less if your hair is shorter. At this point follow the steps we’ve talked about earlier for Claire Dane’s “good foundation”.

FergieWhen the hair is dry, set on the top with large Jet Set rollers. Spray some of my prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray over the rollers and let them set for 10 to 15 minutes. While they cool, heat up two large Hot Tools irons, a one-inch and a one and half-inch. Because the wave and curl is so large it usually will fall out after a few hours, but in the film biz we have to make it say for hours upon hours and keep it looking lively. My trick is to pre-curl the curl.

Jessica AlbaUse the smaller iron first to curl, let them cool and then go back through and curl again with the larger iron.

Sometimes I will split the smaller curls and rejoin them with the split portion of the curl that is next to it. This only works if you join curls that are going in the same direction. Spray each curl slightly after curling with prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray, leaving it to cool and rest, then continue.

Jessica SimpsonAfter your last curl has cooled for about five minutes, take the rollers out and brush the top. Let it fall into your natural part or try something new. These beauties have either a center part or just off-center to the right. To blend the top to the sides, split your curls at the point where the two textures join and curl using the larger iron. It will give you a gentle flow of texture from the top to the ends of your hair.

Using my prawduct® Love That Shine Drops on your palms and fingertips, run it through your hair gently. It will give your hair shine and texture. Finish with prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray for a little extra holding power.

Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lopez and Miley Cyrus
"Doing the Same Thing But Making it their Own".
Penelope Cruz
I love the way they all look, but Penelope takes the whole cake! Everything from the line of her arm, the perfect fit of her gown, her expression and the simple and polished beautiful hairstyle that tops it off is just so ravishing!

The outline of these hairstyles is basically the same, but they’ve all chosen a different texture and a little different position of the hair cascade in the back. Start with my "good foundation" tip from the description of Clair Danes’ hair.

For Penelope’s look, spray the top and sides of your hair with my prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray, let it dry and do it again. This will give your hair some texture and keep it from being what we hairstylists call slippery. Run your fingers through your hair several times to break it up or use a wide tooth comb. If it’s easier, pull your hair up and back, mimicking the shape that Penelope has. Spray in some more prawduct® Rawhold if needed. Back-combing can be helpful depending on your texture and density. Make sure the shape shows the texture and separation from your fingers. Put your thumbs from each hand at your ears, bring them around your head until they meet, twist the hair to the right (or left) and secure with hidden bobby pins. The hair left out can be gently rolled into a few barrel curls clipped to rest while you do your face, then released to fall into a soft and gentle wave. Use my prawduct® Love That Shine Spray to showcase the style with some truly brilliant shine.

Jennifer LopezFor Jennifer, do the same hairspray technique, but use your Olivia Garden brush and brush your hair through well. Now use your thumbs, place them above your temples at the round of your head, grab the hair and pull it back to your crown, making sure the top layer of hair is smooth. Secure with a few hidden bobby pins. Do the same on the sides here, keep it as close to your head as you can and use a comb if it helps. Secure again with hidden bobby pins. You can crisscross them because they will be hidden. The hair left out should be curled with a one-inch iron quickly. Spray the top and side well with prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray to keep it tight. A little prawduct® Love that Shine Spray will make your hair shine like the goddess you are!

Miley Cyrus

For Miley, spiral curl your hair from roots to ends with a one-inch Hot Tools curling iron. Using some prawduct® Dream Cream on your palms and fingertips, pull your hair back at the ears with your thumbs, but before you secure, pull some hair up at the crown. Secure with some hidden bobby pins. Add a few drops of my prawduct® Love That Shine drops to the prawduct® Dream Cream that is left on your palms and run through your hair in the back for shiny tendrils. A little prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray over the top and sides will give you a little extra shine, as well as hold.
Charlize Theron and Debra Messing
"Waves That Roll Over You"
Charlize Theron
These beauties are sporting waves that are perfect examples of how starting with a "good foundation" can produce a beautifully polished, lasting hairstyle. Follow the “good foundation” steps from my comments on Claire Danes, except start with a little hair cocktail of two of my prawduct®s, The Flat Factor and prawduct® Rawhold Gel. Mix them together in your palms, work and comb through well making sure it is distributed evenly. prawduct® The Flat Factor will calm the frizz and curl and the gel will add holding power.

For Charlize, try using hot rollers. Hot Tools Professional makes a perfect set of rollers, including 12 extra large soft rollers with Tourmaline technology to save the health of your hair. Establish a deep side part on your favorite side. In the front, heavier side, over direct the front roller onto your forehead. Use a spray of my prawduct® Super Volumizing Tonic on each section of hair before rolling.

Debra MessingFor Debra’s front don’t over direct the front roller. Keep it at the hairline. Allow the rollers to cool completely and remove. Brush through well towards the floor with your Olivia Garden Supreme Ionic brush. Watch the wave patterns taking form. A finger-wave traditionally has a two-finger width. Check with your index and middle finger to make sure. On each side of the wave is the ridge. Use one duckbill clip on each side of the ridge, pushing them together to extenuate. Do the entire head, allowing the ends to curl under. Spray a generous amount of my prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray and let your hair rest for a few minutes. Then remove the clips and brush gently down towards the floor without breaking up the patterns. My prawduct® Love That Shine Spray is perfect to make sure you and your waves shine like stars.
Sarah Jessica Parker and Tyra Banks
"Hair for Days That's Texturiffic"
Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica and Tyra are good examples of mixed textures using different size irons. With these styles it adds something interesting if they are slightly fuzzy… really!

On damp hair use a really generous dose of my prawduct® Super Volumizing Tonic. Grab your hair dryer, flip your head over and rough-dry your hair. If your hair has a wave or curl, use a diffuser. When it is completely dry, flip back over.

Tyra BanksCurl your hair with Hot Tools two and a half-inch iron. Do your entire head curling in all directions. Curl over curls you have already done. Do half the hair shaft. Have two curl textures or even different directions on parts of the hair. This is your opportunity to try everything, think outside of the curl! If you look at Sarah Jessica, her right side temple clearly has a few ringlets that do not match the left side temple – and it works! Tyra has some fatter curl patterns here and there mixed with some skinny curls – and it works too!

When you’re finished curling, take some of my prawduct® Dream Cream, rub it over your palms warming it up, flip your head over and sort of palm it around your head. It’s not really fingering it through, but you can on the ends. What this will do is give your hair texture and shine, as well as add some hold too. Flip your head back over and let your part come through. You can refine it or it can be broken – anything will work. Spray a little prawduct® Love That Shine Spray over the top and sides, followed by prawduct® Rawhold Hairspray to help hold all your textures. Intentionally messy and textured hair is just so much fun!
